Every tagline has a story. Mine starts with a man who held 186 patents — and ends somewhere I didn't expect.

The inspiration

Charles Kettering asked better questions.

My tagline is a riff on a line from Charles F. Kettering (1876–1958) — one of the great American inventors. He held 186 patents, founded Delco, and ran research at General Motors for nearly three decades. If you've ever started a car without hand-cranking it, you've used his most famous invention: the electric self-starter. He also gave us Freon refrigerant and the first practical colored paints for mass-produced cars — and, in 1945, co-founded what became Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, on the belief that the discipline of industrial research could be turned on cancer.

He was, above all, a problem-solver. And the line of his I've carried my whole career is this:

My update

Not half solved. Solved.

It's my favorite quote. But my recent work expanded it — and pushed it past "half."

When I learned about superposition in quantum computing, the aphorism took on a new meaning. In superposition, all possible answers exist at once — simultaneously, undecided. The answer isn't created; it's already there. It only becomes defined the moment a precise question is asked.

That's exactly what I kept seeing in the lab. State a problem loosely, and you get noise and argument. State it precisely — with the right axes, the right constraints, the right question — and the answer stops hiding. It announces itself. The work was never inventing the answer. The work was learning to ask the question sharply enough that only one answer could survive.

I've spent my entire career learning how to ask the right question. That's really what MAI-Alchemy is — a way to state a problem so precisely that the solution can't stay hidden. LUMA is where it began, not where it ends. And now that I've learned how, what I want most is to show others how to do it too.

So — a problem precisely stated… solved.
